SarahWelcome to a Clued In bonus episode. I’m Sarah.
BrookAnd I’m Brook, and we both love mystery.
SarahHi, Brook.
BrookHi, Sarah. Are you as excited as I am for another Watch Along?
SarahI think so. I’m excited because this is a book where it’s based on a book that I’ve read. ah And so it’ll be really interesting to see how it’s been adapted.
BrookExactly. So that wasn’t the case for our first watch-along, but this one we are going to be watching A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
SarahSo the book was written by Holly Jackson and it was published in 2019 and it’s the first of a trilogy. There’s three books in the series as well as a novella. I enjoyed this book, and I think it was very popular on ah you know among readers on Instagram and social media, which is I think where I originally saw it. It is YA, so know a younger sleuth, and I’m looking forward to watching this.
BrookRight. And kind of the twist on this is I haven’t read the book and I fully intended to, ah but you know, the summer got busy and it didn’t happen. And so at first we thought that was maybe kind of a an issue, but then we thought, you know, it adds an interesting layer as we watch it and you know, the basic storyline, at least as the book is told. And I don’t, I think it’s going to be fun to kind of see you know what our expectations are and the way we like to conjecture about the storyline. I think it’s gonna, it’ll make it even more fun.
SarahAh Exactly. And the nice thing about this is it’s only six episodes, the Netflix version. So, you know, people can watch it with us, but it’s not a 10-episode series arc that they’re signing up for.
BrookExactly. And um as I understand it, just a little bit I’ve read about the book. um Some of the story is told in an unusual format. Is that right?
Sarahum Well, so the book includes some podcast episodes or or snippets of audio conversations because the premise is that this student who I think she’s in her final year of high school and they have like a capstone project that they need to do and she chooses to investigate the disappearance and murder of a girl from the same town as her five years earlier. And um you know so she speaks to some of the people who would have known her. And yeah, so there’s a little bit of ah an unusual format. And so maybe we’ll see that in the in the show.
BrookYeah, I’m looking forward to seeing how the two translate from whatever was portrayed in the written book to ah to the film. And I will say that I really enjoy, i I can’t say if the actress portrays the main character in the book, well because I haven’t read it but I do like this actress a lot. um This is Emma Myers and people who watched Wednesday ah will remember her as the very blonde and bubbly roommate to Wednesday and it seems like she’s in a very different character this time so that’ll be fun.
SarahYeah, yeah, that’ll be that’ll be really interesting to see. And the other thing that I think is worth mentioning is that when the book was published, there was a UK version and there was an American version. And so all the character names remained the same and the premise of the books remained the same, but the setting was completely different. um So in the American version, I think it’s in Connecticut, and in the UK version, it’s you know a small town somewhere somewhere in the UK, and I can’t remember the name of the town. um But I believe that this is set in the UK, the screen adaptation.
BrookIsn’t that interesting? i don’t I can’t think of another book. i mean Certainly we know that we have different versions. We’d get different covers, though the publishers in the UK versus um the US. I do think sometimes I’ve noticed different names for whatever reason. Sometimes a character’s name will be slightly different. But usually the setting is the same, right? If it’s set in the UK, then even the US version of the book is set in that UK location. So um really interesting that that happened. That’s a whole different topic of conversation, but um it’ll be fun to see where the Netflix production lands.
SarahWell, and I think Holly Jackson is ah from the UK, so I’m fairly certain that this one is set in the UK. But I read an article where she talked about that that was a publisher decision and she had to rework you know rework the book to make it, um in the publisher’s opinion, more palatable for an American audience.
SarahI think that may be discounting the intelligence of American readers, quite honestly, that, you know, they couldn’t follow a book that was set outside the US.
BrookYeah, I would agree. And and especially discounting a group of YA readers, because maybe if that played into the decision, because it is meant for slightly younger readers. But again, I don’t i don’t think that that’s a great decision, personally. but
SarahYeah, anyway, as far as I know, there’s just this one screen adaptation um and it’s the, like I said, I’m i’m fairly certain it’s set in the UK so that i’m I’m just really looking forward to watching it.
BrookI am too. I can’t wait. And um as you all remember, we do not watch ahead. So the next time you hear from us, we’ll have watched episode one and we will discuss episode one and we won’t watch episode two until that’s complete and then so on.
SarahYeah, and we’re aiming to release these a week apart. So if you’re watching with us, you don’t have to wait too long between um watching the episodes if you watch them on the same cadence as us. ah And you don’t hopefully have to wait too long to hear our thoughts as we watch.
BrookExactly. So you’ll get a feel for the way these shows go.
